Since I recently discovered youcontrol:tunes, a free plugin for the menu bar that allows basic iTunes access (play/pause, next, last) but also allows to easily dig into the whole library without ever seeing the iTunes window again, I listened to more and more music, just because it is now sooo easy. Although my library by now carries almost as much stuff as my iPod can handle - I still came across one problem. On random mode, there are some songs coming up that I just cannot hear no more right now because I heard them so often recently. Sure, there is the stars-rating to “promote” songs that you like. But what about music that you don’t like? At least, not right now? That you are just tired of?

I am requesting a new feature for iTunes: Negative ranking. Stars of dark matter. dogpiles. thumbs down. I really don’t care how the symbol looks like, but it should get rid of the song for me, the more negative vote it gets the longer. So, let’s say - for one star, the song will not be played for the next 24 hours. two stars, a week. Three stars, two weeks. Four stars, a month, five stars, a year. That should help get rid of even the worst case of “overhearing”. You know, deep down we still love it. Otherwise it would get deleted. But it is just — too — much!
